This Volunteer Appreciation Month, we are highlighting Dr. Khalid Hussein!
During the 2024 Volunteer of the Year Awards, Dr. Hussein won “Resident of the Year.” While this award most often goes to one of our all-stars PGY-3s, (residents in their third and final year at CommunityHealth,” Dr. Hussein earned it while in his second year with us! His commitment to vaccination efforts over the past tear has been beyond impressive, as well as his overall approach to care and commitment to our patients.

In a few sentences, tell us more about yourself and your background.
“I am a medical graduate from Sudan and a current PGY-2 resident at Saint Joseph
Hospital in Chicago. I am the youngest of 5 siblings, all of which happen to be
doctors!”
What is your favorite memory with CommunityHealth?
“I learned to give vaccines and gave my first vaccine at CommunityHealth, it was one
of the main reasons I was able to proceed with my QI project.”
What has kept you volunteering all this time?
“Working with the patients has kept me volunteering! While it can get challenging at times, I am always remotivated after talking to patients and seeing how much of an impact CH has on their lives.”
What is something you have learned from volunteering?
“Teamwork! I love working with every member at our Friday clinics and I can never get anything done without their help!”
What has been your biggest takeaway from CommunityHealth, and how does this impact your other life or career goals?
“CommunityHealth as a whole goes to show that if there is a will, there is a way! The
entire premise of it is very inspiring.”
How has working with CommunityHealth influenced your perception of health care?
“Working with everyone at CommunityHealth really enlightened me about how much work it takes to ensure proper healthcare for all people (especially the uninsured population) here in the US. The amount of work done and resources made available at a free clinic always amazes me.”
What does being a healthcare professional mean to you?
“Being able to translate all the knowledge I have accumulated into helping others; while remaining humble enough to know there is much more to learn.”
What is your favorite song or artist?
“Viva La Vida by Coldplay!”
