Volunteer Spotlight: Ann Corkery (Pharmacy Volunteer of the Year in 2022)

With almost seven years of service, Ann Corkery has volunteered with CommunityHealth since 2016. As a volunteer in the pharmacy, Ann’s service ensures patients maintain care outside of clinic hours through medication management. Ann currently holds over 455 compassionate hours with us and was rewarded Pharmacy Volunteer of the Year in 2022.

In light of Ann’s devoted service, we are excited to showcase more of her inspiring story for this month’s Volunteer Spotlight…

Tell us more about yourself and your background:

I grew up in Green Bay, WI in a big Catholic family. I had 7 siblings which my Mom and Dad provided for by running a small independent shoe store. I went to pharmacy school at UW Madison. I got my PharmD from UIC (University of IL at Chicago). I spent the majority of my work career in Peoria, IL.

What is your favorite memory from your time with CommunityHealth?

Primarily all the nice people I have met over the years helping at the clinic.

Why and how did you begin volunteering at CommunityHealth?

I retired from my job in hospital pharmacy and wanted to find some volunteer work. I saw something about the clinic in a newsletter from a professional organization I belonged to at the time.

What has kept you volunteering all this time?

I enjoy the people who work for and are serviced by the clinic. I also wanted to keep my license active.

What is something you’ve learned from volunteering at CommunityHealth?

There are a lot of people that benefit from the care that the clinic provides.

Why is volunteering important to you? What do you get out of it?

It keeps a person grounded and appreciative of all the things that are sometimes taken for granted. It allows me to use my skill and provide care for people.

What advice would you give to a new volunteer at CommunityHealth?

It’s a nice atmosphere to work in, lots of diversity and opportunities to learn.

Outside of volunteering with CommunityHealth, how do you like to spend your free time?

I enjoy spending time with my family (husband and 3 adult daughters) and my grandchildren. I also love the outdoors, walking, hiking, and biking.

What’s your favorite movie?

Dr. Zhivago
