At the start of the pandemic, some of our wonderful volunteers helped out with a temporary prescription delivery program to ensure our patients still had access to critical medications! We talked with Kelsey LaMartina, one of the Rx delivery volunteers, about her experience. Read on to learn more!
How long have you been volunteering with us?
I have been volunteering with CommunityHealth since April of 2019.
What motivated you to volunteer with the Rx delivery program in particular?
I was motivated to volunteer with the Rx delivery program because it provided a really unique opportunity to serve my community by serving those impacted most by COVID-19, and helping families stay home and stay safe.
Please tell us a bit about your experience delivering prescriptions to patients during COVID-19 and any major takeaways.
This was an all-around really fun experience! The Rx Delivery program was a different experience from volunteering in the pharmacy in that I was able to get my boots on the ground in the community and help deliver services to patient’s doorsteps. Along with prescriptions, we also delivered food donations and masks and the most rewarding part of the experience were the smiles and the gratitude from patients and families. It was truly a pleasure to be able to serve in such a special way!
Why is volunteering important to you? What do you get out of it?
Volunteering is important to me because it teaches one how to be humble. I’ve come to realize that I will never stop learning, and by volunteering in my community I continue to grow and develop as a person and as a future pharmacist. While my service benefits the patients of CommunityHealth, it also benefits me by allowing me to connect to my community and learn from the amazing staff.
Thanks so much to Kelsey and all the other wonderful volunteers who helped deliver prescriptions to patients at the start of the pandemic!
