CommunityHealth is proud to present, for the very first time, an All In™ open for patient registration ONLY! On September 3rd, CommunityHealth and a group of patient participants will visit Just Roots Chicago, a community urban farm, for a tour and cooking demonstration led by Just Roots staff.
Just Roots is a community-driven organization with two urban farm locations, one in Sauk Village, IL and one here in Bronzeville established just two years ago. The farm operates in partnership with Saint James Catholic Church & Food Pantry, hence its name: Saint James Community Farm.
In just 18,000 square feet of space, Just Roots produces 10,000 pounds of fresh, culturally relevant fruits and vegetables every year. The farm is tended by volunteers; it is a truly communal space that empowers community members to learn about sustainable farming and healthy cooking.
All produce harvested at Saint James Community Farm goes directly back to the community through an affordable community supported agriculture program, a weekly farm stand, and weekly donations to nearby food pantries.
Just Roots also offers educational programming for community members. Offering guidance on how to grow their own food, plus hands-on farming experience and cooking demonstrations, Just Roots was the perfect partner for CommunityHealth. Since our cooking classes have been on pause since March of 2020, this special All In™ event will be the perfect way to generate excitement for the return of the on-site healthy cooking program.
Though this event is not open to the public, we invite everyone to join us for the Food as Medicine virtual discussion, which will take place ten days after the in-person event at Just Roots.
